December 2006, Issue #53

Letter from JETS

The holidays bring light and good cheer into our lives during the darkest days of the year. As the winter solstice approaches, our eyes are drawn toward the skies and the wonder of the universe around us. What a perfect time to explore the engineering discipline that is furthering our knowledge of our galaxy and designing the vehicles that makes it possible for so many families to gather from far away to enjoy these festive days together. We’re talking about aerospace engineering, of course.

Our extreme engineers of the month share the latest developments in aircraft engines and the space suits that astronauts will use on the Moon, Mars, and Orion, the next generation of NASA space vehicles. Hot Topic takes you further into our solar system to learn about Stardust and the samples of the comet’s tail it brought back from Saturn. This month’s Engineering Pathways provide educational resources to explore the importance of robotics in aerospace engineering applications.

December is an exciting time of year at JETS. JETS Clubs launched November 1 with nearly 900 registered members to date. This year’s National Engineering Design Competition (NEDC) competition is in full swing with 35 teams from around the country headed into Round 2.  In addition, JETS is gearing up for the TEAMS Competition. This month JETS added the University of Arkansas as a host site, bringing the total to more than 70 sites for 2007. TEAMS registration closes at the end of January. If you haven’t already registered, plan to do so soon.
