December 2005, Issue #44

Letter from JETS

It's JETS season for tens of thousands of high school students across the country. Thirty teams nationwide are preparing their submissions for Round II of the new NEDC, which are due January 6. The buzz has already begun for the TEAMS competition coming up in February and March—with hosts, coaches, and many of the student teams beginning to prepare for the competition. This year, over 14,000 high school students are gearing-up and preparing to participate in the TEAMS competition (see the JETS Update page for tips on getting ready). It's also prime season to take JETS' NEAS+ aptitude test to assess your areas of strength and those you wish to fortify before the end of the school year. See the JETS Update for full details.

Both the feature of the month and the extreme engineer explore architectural engineering. If turning architects' dreams into reality by finding exciting technological approaches sounds exciting to you, this may be the engineering specialty you'll want to pursue.

Our current event features an engineering marvel—the new Georgia Aquarium. The feature takes you behind the scenes to see how scientists, engineers, and veterinarians are creating and managing the world's newest and largest aquarium.

Hands on activities for December provide students insight into architectural engineering and building sound structures with the human arch and paper bridge activities.

Happy holidays to all from JETS!
