Letter from JETS
Fall is in the air… and what a great time of year for sports! Football, soccer, cross country, volleyball, and tennis, to name a few… are all in full swing. Many others—swimming, wrestling, basketball, gymnastics—are just now gearing up. Quite appropriately this month’s JETS PE Times features SPORTS ENGINEERING.
As you’ll learn in the Feature Article, sports engineering applies the basic principles of engineering—mechanical engineering primarily—to sports equipment, training techniques, skills, and injury reduction in sports. If you’re a sports enthusiast—like our Extreme Engineer, Brad Schweigert of PING, manufacturers of golf clubs and irons—sports engineering might just be the right fit for you.
In addition, this month’s Engineering Pathway takes you behind the scene of sports to explore the concepts of momentum. The Hot Topic investigates the engineering and innovation that went into creating an athletic shoe specifically for triathletes. How do you engineer a shoe to slip on quickly after swimming and work well for cycling and running? Visit the JETS Hot Topic to find out.
Not involved in a sport? And even if you are… JETS Clubs is a great way to form your own team—or teams—to gear up for this year’s championship pre-engineering events—the JETS TEAMS and NEDC competitions! JETS is excited to announce that this year it is reviving the JETS Clubs that have served so many students over the decades since JETS was founded. Visit the Coaches Corner to learn more.
We at JETS wish you a very sporting fall. Get ready for the big competitions ahead—whether in the sports or engineering arena! On your mark, get set, go!
