October 2004, Issue #33

Letter from the Editor

Do you have a creative side? Do you have a flair for graphics and graphic design? Do you think engineering can be cool? Would you like to win some money? If you answered "Yes" to any of these questions, we have the contest for you!

The Engineering Education Service Center is putting on a poster contest to encourage students to pursue careers in engineering, technology and science!

"Engineers Can Do Anything" is the theme for the EESC 2004 Poster contest. This year's winning entry can be found in a display of inspiration, excitement, wonder and curiosity. Posters should be fun, motivational and inspire students to pursue a degree in engineering, technology and/or science.

Engineers design, invent, build and concoct the most remarkable physical achievements known to humanity. If you have ever wanted to reduce pollution, end world hunger, become president of the United States, improve the environment, invent exciting technology, become an astronaut, design racecars, solve complex problems or be on the cutting-edge in a dynamic career, then engineering has something for you. Today's students are the future. They are tomorrow's leaders and our nation is dependent on their bright minds, clever genius, and creative spirit.

Contest ends on November 30, 2004. Winners will be notified by December 7, 2004.

The URL for the contest is http://www.engineeringedu.com/contest.htm

You can also download a flyer for posting at http://www.engineeringedu.com/EESCpostercontest.pdf

Please post a flyer anywhere you think people may be interested in competing will see it. Encourage everyone to get involved!

This month, our feature article is on biomedical engineering. According to the American Society of Engineering Education September 2004 issue of Prism Magazine, 40.4% of bachelor's degrees in biomedical engineering were awarded to women last year (Environmental Engineering held the top honor at 42.1% women). This issue also provides several links for biomedical engineering exploration and our The Cool Engineer of the Month is a biomedical engineer.

If you know of camps, contests or engineering events happening this year, be sure to send them to me at the EESC so that we can update our website and keep others informed of your opportunities. Email them to celbaine@engineeringedu.com.

If you know of students, educators or engineers that would be interested in this kind of information please forward this newsletter and encourage them to subscribe.

Without further ado......let's get started!
