If you missed out on this year's TEAMS Competition, save the date for next year: February 1st - March 15th 2008. The 2008 competition will challenge students to go behind the scenes and solve real world engineering challenges related to organizing a major sporting event such as the world cup, super bowl, or Olympic Games!

Next Generation Scholarship Winners Announced!

JETS and Power Engineering magazine are pleased to announce the 2007 recipients of the Next Generation Scholarship! Four students are each being awarded a $5,000 academic scholarship to help begin their college academic studies that will lead to a possible engineering career in the electric power generation sector. The recipients are:

Katherine Hornbostel
Debakey High School for the Health Professions
Houston, TX

Elliot Leonard
Overland High School
Aurora, CO

Thomas Russell, Jr.
Warrenton High School
Warrenton, MO

Christopher Waybright
University High School
Spokane, WA

Each student submitted an application and wrote an essay about a power industry related topic. After careful review from the Scholarship's Steering Committee, these outstanding students were selected from more than 50 students nationwide who competed for the Scholarship.

The essay question:
Tell us why you would or would not want a nuclear power plant to be built in your home town. Does your answer change if, instead of a nuclear power plant, a big solar energy collector is to be built? Why or why not does your answer change?

Click on a student's name above to read the essays.

JETS and Power Engineering extend special appreciation to the corporate sponsors who committed time and financial support to help establish this scholarship.

Assess

JETS launched the 5th edition of the signature assessment tool, aptly renamed, ASSESS on February 1st! Formerly known as the NEAS+ assessment tool, the newly updated and revised ASSESS now features three parts: explore, assess, and experience.

This academic self-assessment tool is designed to help high school students identify their strengths and weaknesses in subject areas important for success in college engineering and technology programs such as mathematical understanding, science reading and reasoning, and practical understanding.

Students can take ASSESS individually and at their convenience or through a program offered by their high school, a university, college or professional organization. ASSESS is being offered at $20 per booklet with quantity discounts available through JETS.

Summer will be here before you know it. What stories will you have to share with your friends in September? The UNITE summer program helps prepare high school students for college through an exciting summer course. These summer classes introduce students to an academic experience which closely parallels that of a first-year student in a university engineering program. Through academic classes, hands-on activities, and team-based learning, students explore the connections between math, science, and real world applications.

Learn about Engineering Licensure

This year marks the 100th anniversary of engineering licensure in the United States. As part of its celebration activities, the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) and the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) have partnered to publish a special issue of PE magazine dedicated to licensure. The June 2007 PE magazine features the role professional engineering licensure has played in protecting the public health, safety, and welfare over the last century—and the outlook for the next 100 years. Other articles cover what the PE means to four prominent engineers, trailblazing women in engineering, programs to attract the next generation of engineers, and PEs who use their training to make a difference in legislative issues that so often call for technical expertise and problem-solving skills.

Design Squad, a new television show on PBS, is part reality competition, all engineering, and major fun. Design Squad follows eight high school students as they compete to design and build fantastic, whimsical, fully operational engineering projects. Projects include everything from a machine that automatically makes pancakes to a motorized red wagon that can reach speeds up to 20mph. In the final episode, the two top-scorers battle for the Grand Prize-a college scholarship provided by the Intel Foundation.
