If you missed out on this year's TEAMS Competition, mark your calendar now for the 2007 season (February 3rd–March 11th, 2007). Next year's competition promises to be better than ever. JETS is currently working on some new and exciting pieces that will compliment the actual 2007 TEAMS Competition. Stay tuned for future updates on what is in store.

National Engineering Design Challenge

Gulliver Preparatory School, located in Miami, was not only this year's NEDC National Winner, they took what they learned and built on their experience. This group of students decided that their talent and passion could be utilized in their own community. They are working on another new invention to help people with disabilities. Susanna Morse, who is diagnosed with Juvenile Spinal Atrophy, often finds herself in situations where bad weather inhibits her from performing everyday activities. Engineering students will design and create a retractable canopy to attach to her power wheelchair. The canopy will be made of clear, impermeable material and be powered by a button or joystick control. Such an invention would allow Susanna to carry on everyday activities despite weather conditions. After assisting Susanna, the students hope to take this invention and adapt it to the specific needs of other people whose disabilities confine them to a wheelchair.

By participating in the 2007 JWOD/JETS National Engineering Design Challenge not only can your team win an all expense paid trip to Washington DC to participate in the National Finals, but you can also make a huge impact in your own community.

Mark your calendar for these upcoming dates:

Registration Open September 4, 2006
Round I: Take the Challenge! Due: October 16, 2006
Round II: Start Building! Due: December 18, 2006
Round III: National Finals! February 16, 2007

Summer will be here before you know it. What stories will you have to share with your friends in September? The UNITE summer program helps prepare high school students for college through an exciting summer course. These summer classes introduce students to an academic experience which closely parallels that of a first-year student in a university engineering program. Through academic classes, hands-on activities, and team-based learning, students explore the connections between math, science, and real world applications. Please visit: http://www.jets.org/programs/unite.cfm for more information.

2006 Program Dates:

University of Detroit Mercy July 10th-August 4th
University of New Orleans June 12th - July 7th

Deciding on a College Career?

High school students sometimes decide on their college career paths without really knowing what those courses of study will involve. In order to help students determine how well-prepared they are to enter an engineering or technology program in college and to answer questions students have about engineering and technology study, JETS has developed the National Engineering Aptitude Search+ (NEAS+) academic survey. The NEAS+ enables students to make informed decisions about their futures.

For more information on the NEAS+ and how to place an order please visit: http://www.jets.org/programs/neas.cfm.
