Feature Story: Fire Protection Engineering
According to the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), "Fire protection engineering is the application of science, engineering principles and experience to protect people and their environments from the destructive effects of fire." Fire Protection engineers (FPE's) work for the government, insurance agencies, hospitals and health care facilities, fire departments and 40 percent of FPE's work in consulting.

Cool Engineer of the Month
Erica Kuligowski is a fire protection engineer in the Fire Research Division at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). At NIST Erica is developing an understanding of the systems that protect people from fire. So, how did Erica get interested in fire protection engineering? JETS Update
Students from New Canaan High School (CT) participating at the University of New Haven and East Brunswick High School (NJ) participating at New Jersey Institute of Technology earned top honors of posting the highest Part I score (71 correct out of 80) in this year's TEAMS competition. This year, over 750 high schools and 1,600 teams participated in the TEAMS 2005 competition. For the state ranking report and schools advancing to nationals, Click here. A Global Marathon For, By and About Women in Engineering
Starting at noon, U.S. Eastern Standard Time on March 24, 2005, and concluding at noon on March 25, 2005, at any and all times during this 24-hour period there was a "conversation" taking place. The Global Marathon was a combination of live Internet chats and teleconferences. The National Engineers Week Foundation served as the central "booking agent" and keeper of the day's calendar. Fire protection engineers use physics, chemistry and math to protect people and buildings from fires. Fire protection engineers analyze how buildings are used, how fires start and grow, and how fires affect people and property. They use the latest technologies to design systems to control fires, alert people to danger, and provide means for escape. While fire protection engineers are the lead professionals in the design of fire safe buildings and structures, fire protection engineers also work closely with other professionals, including engineers of other disciplines, architects, state and local building officials, and local fire departments.
