JETS Students Invited to Present at Technology Fair
Hosted by Verizon Business
On March 26th, nine students from Staples High School (Westport, CT) will attend the opening ceremonies of a technology fair held in Basking Ridge, NJ at the Verizon auditorium as the 2008 Global Marathon For, By and About Women in Engineering gets underway.
As chair of the fourth annual Global Marathon, a project of the National Engineers Week Foundation, Verizon Business is kicking off the festivities with a live web-cast and in-person audience including a panel discussion and live links to women worldwide, encouraging high school and college women to imagine their future.
To help inspire the technology fair attendees, the engineering team from Staples will present two of their assistive technology devices that were built as part of the JETS/AbilityOne National Engineering Design Challenge (NEDC). The team, led by Nate Fox, will demonstrate how engineering makes a difference in the lives of others and the world a better place. The basis for the NEDC is to incorporate the engineering design process in the creation of an assistive technology device that helps a person with disabilities succeed in the workplace. The devices presented include:
 |
The Automatic Retrievable Mechanical Shelving System (ARMSS): A unique bookshelf designed for use by people suffering from back pain or who use a wheelchair. It uses three simple mechanical motions to bring items on any shelf to a height easily reachable for anyone with restricted movement. |
 |
The EZfile: A file cabinet device that allows a person with arthritis to easily search and retrieve a file. Creating a moving waterfall effect for the files allows the person operating the drawer to access and see each file while alleviating many of the repetitive finger and hand movements associated with the task. |
