What She Does
Kate is employed at Marathon Oil and is responsible for preventative maintenance for medium voltage (5000 Volt) distribution systems pipeline stations. Pipeline stations help keep product moving through the pipelines from refineries to terminals, among other places. At the terminals, the product (gas, kerosene, jet fuel, etc...) gets loaded onto a transport and shipped to the gas/fuel stations where it is then distributed to the public.
Making a Difference
Kate makes a difference by ensuring gas/fuel stations remain energized and continue to keep gasoline moving through pipelines that supply gas to cars. This process ensures that employees will be safe working within their stations.
Why Engineering?
Kate admitted always being excellent at math and science and enjoyed making sense of the equations and number sequences. She also liked to see how things were put together and how they worked. "I remember as a little girl taking apart our new grill as my dad was putting it together so I could see for myself how it worked," said Grey. Kate said, "Ultimately curiosity was the biggest factor in becoming an engineer."
Advice
It's very important to take as many math and science classes as possible before getting into college. Kate said, "My professors were amazing and nobody expects you to know everything right off the bat. You will have to work hard, but the reward is definitely worth it."
Hobbies/Free Time
When not working, Kate enjoys reading fiction and also plays volleyball, bowls, and fishes. She is even starting to hunt with her husband. In addition, Kate admitted liking to build things and develop programs and spreadsheets on her home computer. Kate said, "I have even helped wire parts of our house and helped run networks for family and friends computers."
