What is TEAMS?

TEAMS-at-a-Glance
  • 2010 Theme: Water, Water Everywhere!
  • Schools, Groups, Homeschools and youth organizations may compete.
  • Two Competition Levels:
    • 9th/10th grade level
    • 11th/12th grade level
  • Teams = 4 to 8 students
  • Two Parts:
    • Part 1, multiple choice questions
    • Part 2, open-ended questions

TEAMS is an annual theme-based academic competition giving students in grades 9-12 the opportunity to discover engineering and how they can make a difference in the world.

Students become part of the action as they work together and use the practical applications of math and science to answer engineering questions about everyday world challenges.

What will students tackle in 2010? The critical and global need of providing access to one of nature's most vital resources on earth: clean water.

TEAMS also …

  • Shows students what's possible with a major and career in engineering.
  • Energizes them with new academic topics and content.
  • Gets students involved in the classroom or after school club/group.
  • Fosters creativity, critical thinking, teamwork and problem solving skills.
  • Teaches students how math, science and engineering can change the world!

Competition questions are focused around a common theme and in 2010 the theme will be: Water, Water, Everywhere! With more than 900 million people worldwide living without access to clean water, this humanitarian crisis keeps millions of people in poverty indefinitely. Students will experience how their creativity and talents can help solve this global crisis.

TEAMS has two competition levels, 9th/10th grade and 11th/12th grade, to provide students with a fun and challenging experience suitable for their grade level. Questions posed will be different and modified academically per level. Students in 9th/10th grade may opt to register for and participate in the 11th/12th level but will compete using those questions and scored within that level.

Note: 11th/12th grade students may NOT participate in the 9th/10th grade level.

Competitions take place between February 15 and March 16 at multiple locations across the country. Even though the time frame to compete is several weeks, students only compete one day and the date is selected by the competition site.
